awe.sm is hiring

we’re
and you can be too

At awe.sm we’re turning social media into science. We’re measuring, analyzing, and predicting the way content spreads through social channels like Twitter and Facebook. We want to figure out what’s interesting, what’s important, and why. Because it’s useful stuff to know.

Our business model is to measure how much money our customers make through social channels (it’s more than most people realize), to help them make more, and to charge them for that service. We have customers you’ve heard of, and funding from some great VC firms and angel investors.

we like working here. you will too.

We are working on cool problems with big data. We use the greatest tech, not just the latest tech. We’re agile in the sense that we get stuff done and move quickly, not Agile in the sense that we have tons of pointless meetings. We hate pointless meetings.

We’re engineering-led and developer-focused, building tools other devs use to integrate our platform with theirs. We believe in doing things right, so we use version control and write unit tests and we don’t use ActiveRecord for anything because we’re not afraid of our data. We love data.

We embrace the UNIX philosophy of simple, well-written parts loosely coupled. We believe in the right tool for the job. We believe in hiring people who are smart and get things done, and getting out of their way. We have our own IRC server because good tools never go out of style.

We believe the view from our desks is pretty great, and so are our catered lunches three times a week. We believe the Mission District, San Francisco is a fun place to work. We believe you’ll agree.

  1. We collect a ton of data

Our customers use our tools and APIs to create enormous amounts of data every day. Our code is in PHP on Zend and Ruby on Sinatra.

  2. We store it up

We throw data into memcache and redis and souped-up MySQL and Riak and Amazon S3 and, hell, everywhere. We have a lot of data.

  3. We crunch it down

We were using Hadoop and Hive but then we went real-time with the aid of RabbitMQ and now we’re moving to Kafka and Storm.

  4. We send information back

We provide analytics to our customers using our GUI app written in Backbone.js (and HTML5 and CSS, of course).

  5. Profit!

Both for our customers, and for us. That’s what you call a win-win.

where do you fit in?

We need people who can make stuff pretty, make it fast, make it scale, and most of all make it understandable. We need you to be smart, we need you to get stuff done, and we need you to love doing this stuff.

We don’t need you to know about every tech we talked about up there. We are not looking for wizards or ninjas or rock stars. We’re looking for great engineers, who are much rarer than any of those people and don’t have to wear special clothing to do their job.

but enough about us.

Tell us about you. What kind of stuff do you do? Click anything you're good at, and we'll send you to the best job.

Don't worry too much about getting the "right" job; if we think you're a better fit for a different position we'll move you to it. There's also no need to apply more than once!
